Education
I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from San Jose State University and then attended the PGSP-Stanford PsyD Consortium where I received my Doctor of Psychology and Master of Science degrees in clinical psychology. During my graduate training I had the privilege of studying under many leading psychologists and psychiatrists at Stanford University Medical School's Department of Psychiatry.
Experience
Adults and Couples:
I have extensive experience providing veterans with psychotherapy and diagnostic testing services at several Veterans Affairs clinics, including the National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (NCPTSD), where I conducted research on the impact of PTSD on the spouses and families of veterans diagnosed with PTSD.
My previous experience at community mental health clinics gave me the opportunity to work with adults and families with limited resources who often presented with severe and chronic mental health disorders, including severe depression, bipolar disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, ADD/ADHD, and anger, stress management, or crisis situations. I have also assisted couples in improving their communication, parenting as a team, and increasing their intimacy so that they can develop satisfying life-long relationships.
Children, Adolescents and Families:
As part of my training, I completed a year-long post-doctoral residency focused exclusively on empirically validated psychotherapy and psychological diagnostic testing of children and adolescents and their families. In private practice and non-profit organizations I have provided therapy extensively for children and adolescents between 5 and 18 years old and their parents and siblings to help them manage a variety of problems including Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorders, oppositional and defiant behaviors, and adjustment to family changes such as divorce or blended families. I have also led groups and educational classes for parents and children to build the parenting, family support, and life skills that are necessary to thrive amidst the stresses inherit in the Silicon Valley.
Diagnostic Testing
Along with psychotherapy, I also have conducted numerous psychological diagnostic evaluations on children and adolescents who were entering the foster care system or struggling in school with attention and behavioral issues. For adults, I have provided testing services for parents in child custody situations, adults with attention deficit problems at work or college, and adults seeking clarification of personality and interpersonal issues or with complex presentations of symptoms.
Personal Background
As a native of the Bay Area, I have lived here the majority of my life where I previously worked for 20 years in the engineering industry. I believe that my life experiences, overcoming my failures and achieving successes as an individual, a husband, and as a parent have seasoned my perspectives and have influenced my approach as a clinician.
